The COVID-19 pandemic completely changed the pet ownership landscape across the United States. A December 2022 Forbes Advisor survey found that 78% of all pet owners across the country acquired their first pet or additional ones from March 2020 forward. People who worked remotely were eight times more likely to acquire a pet than on-site essential workers from March 2020 to March 2021.
Dogs remain America’s favorite pet, with 45% of U.S. households owning at least one dog in 2022 versus 29% with a cat, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). About 43% of Texas households have dogs. Austin may be the dog owning capital in the state. A 2018 University of Texas analysis found 116 dogs and only 66 children in the 171 households surveyed in east Austin that year. The most critical aspect of pet turf installation is fast drainage. Our Pet turf drains faster than 1000 inches per hour. The industry standard is 40 – 50 inches per hour because all other synthetic turf has a solid urethane backing with holes punched sporadically for drainage. This slows down the drainage process and creates storage pockets for urine and bacteria. This creates a highly unpleasant odor. Our pet turf can easily be washed and sterilized by natural occurring rain or manually with a water hose.
Drainage mat works well indoors and outdoor pet areas whether a concrete slab or compacted gravel base. Our drainage mat acts as a barrier to prevent urine from contaminating areas designated for pets. Synthetic pet turf lays on top of the drain mat. The weight of turf is supported by closely positioned raised knobs which creats a thin layer of air between turf and mat. This allows water to flow through turf and be directed to desired exit point. This system allows pet turf to be washed to avoid odor that exists in pet areas made with sod and other surfaces. Our pet applications can be washed and sterilized with a “Simple Green Pet deodorizer” available at Lowe’s or Home Depot”
“ENVIRO-FILL” is what National Greens’ installs on top of the fake pet grass which makes it washable and stops it from smelling bad. Non-professional artificial turf companies use plain silica sand which has microscopic chasms or voids within each grain of sand. Those spaces are where bacteria, mold, and smells grow rapidly. National Greens’ alternative to silica sand is Enviro-Fill. It’s spherical, round, like tiny little round marbles. This allows rain water to pass through it quickly and rinse all the waste through the pet turf application. If you have an indoor pet facility, a water hose can be used. A well planned drainage system is mandatory for small spaces, pet spas, veterinarian clinics, or pet relief areas at apartment complexes.
You see the signs in every dog park – “please pick up after your pets.” Most dog owners comply with these requests due to simple courtesy and respect for other dog lovers. But your dogs spend the vast majority of their lives in your backyard. And depending on the size of your yard, potential enclosures (fences), etc., there will be times when you forget about cleaning up. All of our synthetic pet grass applications vary in installation process. It depends on the amount of traffic the pet area will have. High traffic pet areas come with our signature turf drainage mats directly underneath the surface. It creates a barrier between the compacted gravel base and the artificial turf. Liquid pet waste drains away from your yard, preventing long-term, protruding odors. The synthetic turf itself is topped with our Enviro-Fill™ fielding agent. Both solid and liquid waste can penetrate the tiny spaces in our competitors’ turf, causing mold and bacteria to form. Enviro-Fill™ provides yet another mitigation measure so you can simply rinse your artificial pet turf with a garden hose or allow the rain to clean it for you.
While chewing toys and rubber balls provide a lot of dogs hours of entertainment, there are others with habits we’d rather not deal with. Digging holes is an instinctual behavior in many dogs. Terriers are especially prone to this annoying habit. Dogs dig for many reasons. Some are seeking buried treasure (i.e. prey). Pregnant female dogs dig to provide their bellies some relief from the summer heat. Regardless, all that digging leaves your backyard looking very unsightly.
Dogs can’t dig through synthetic turf. It is highly-resistant to friction, and even maintains its bright green colors if your dog is persistent in trying to break through the material.
